FUNGI

The Bøtø area is home to many different kinds of fungi, and it is always fascinating to go on a mushroom hunt. The world of fungi is full of amazing shapes and colours – and flavours, because we shouldn’t forget that some mushrooms are edible. BUT – most importantly – this little series of stories should absolutely not be used as a guide for collecting mushrooms to eat. As a minimum, you need a good mushroom field guide and preferably the company of an experienced mushroom expert. Gathering mushrooms should be done with great respect. There aren’t many extremely poisonous mushrooms in Denmark, but there are a good handful, and some of them are actually deadly if you eat them. So, look at them, smell them, take photos of them, enjoy them, but only take them home for dinner if you or someone with you is 100% sure about how to identify them. If you are at all in doubt, then leave them where they are. And don’t believe the myth that if an animal has eaten a mushroom, then it’s also safe for humans.
