There are hundreds of different animal species living at Bøtø. Most of them very small creepy crawly animals, which can be difficult to find, but are fun to search for. You don’t even need to use a net. You can use a washing-up tub, a white tray, your dog’s old water dish or reuse a plastic food container. Take the container with you into the forest, and shake some tufts of grass, flowers or tree leaves over it. When insects and small animals feel their world shaking around them like this, they think that a bird has landed and wants to eat them. They want to get away fast, so they just let go and let themselves fall. Normally, they would fall on the ground, out of reach of the predator, but if you hold a container underneath them, they’ll land in it, and you’ll be able to get a closer look at them. Remember to bring a magnifying glass! It makes it easier to see the details.
