BUTTERFLIES
Two of the biggest natural attractions in the Bøtø area are the sooty copper and large chequered skipper butterflies. The two butterflies are also one of the main reasons that Bøtø even became a nature reserve. It is the only place in Denmark where you can find the sooty copper. In general, the warm, dry climate of the area makes Bøtø a unique butterfly location. Around 40 different butterfly species have been seen in the area, and also hundreds of different species of nocturnal moths – including some very rare ones. If you want to see butterflies, then the summer is the best time to visit. Many species have a very short season, they are only active for a month or two, so if you come too late, you’ll need to make the trip again next year. Moths can be very difficult to find in the daytime, as they sit and hide in the vegetation. You really need to have sharp eyes, but that makes it even more exciting when you finally find one.
