SAND ANIMALS
It is difficult to live in sand. It’s dry, it can get very hot, it’s crumbly, it´s difficult to walk on and tunnels are always collapsing if you try to dig in it. But some animals have worked out how to solve these problems. They live, reproduce, hunt and eat in sand. They run, swim and dig in sand. Some of them are out and about during the day, and some at night. It’s good to go for a sand walk at night but remember to bring a torch as there are often lots of animals running around on the sand. During the day, many of the animals hide under the sand, so it’s a good idea to bring a kitchen sieve to sift the sand, find the animals and have a closer look at them. But do remember that sand isn’t only found at the beach. At Bøtø there is also sand along the roads and in bare patches in forest clearings - and there are some very special animals living there.
