JUST TREES AND BUSHES
There are many trees in a forest – otherwise it wouldn’t be a forest, of course. There can also be many different kinds of trees in a forest, but this is something that you might not notice while you’re walking through one. They can lost in the crowd and fade into the background, and that’s a shame, because Bøtø has many different tree species that are absolutely worth a closer look. This collection of stories presents eight of the most well-known, peculiar and interesting trees at Bøtø, and also a little about the life that takes place inside, on or under them. Some tree species are important to a large number of animal species – the oak tree takes first place, with at least 500-600 associated species – whilst others, like the yew, don’t seem to attract many species – probably because it’s hard and indigestible. And don’t forget that trees can provide the materials for many hours of activities, like horse chestnuts for making conker animals, and the raw materials for natural Christmas decorations. It’s ok to take an acorn or other varieties of seeds home to find out if they will germinate.
